Yes it is common and yes it does not look scary at all ... lets take a closer look.
Basically it buys you the time by making an oponent to repeat his deployment steps. If used right it gives you more then just one turn - When you withdraw creature:
- that is about to attack you (or just after deployment), or
- equipped so hard that it barely moves (attachments are not destroyed but returned as well), or
- big and nasty that was deployed by using all resources on [plus]3 gather
it will be back attacking you ... but not so soon or not that painfully.
Another use ? Save you own creature ... almost decayed ? about to meet lightning ? *poof* its back on hand. (do not wait too long - not working on dead ones)
Withdraw can also be offensive. Just wait till after assigning defenders and then remove that suicidal blocker standing on the way of your high dmg creature.
Summing up - handy on with many possible uses.
Withdraw is a very versatile card, and every deck should have two, if not four. They can be used for creature control, popping an opposing creature back into your opponent's hand before a critical attack (either you attacking them or vice versa). They're also handy for slowing your opponent down, forcing them to pay for a creature twice. They're also great in a discard deck, putting a creature into your opponent's hand before you force them to discard. And great to deal with pesky attachments -- like Nightmare or Decay -- that might be slowing down your own creatures. It's not going to kill a creature outright -- like Fatal Blow -- but it's common and exceedingly useful. Why not use from Withdraws?
